How did God communicate prior to the old Testament?

Question:
Prior to the Old Testament, before Bible was written. What was the scripture given to follow? What is the fundamental difference between inherent and adequate (sufficient)?

Bible passages
Gen 3:8-9, Deu 11:18-21, Luk 1:1-4

Discussion:
Prior to the scripture or the scroll. God speaks to man directly Gen3:8-9.
The first written commandments was written by God Himself Exodus 20. Main emphasis was laid on God wanting to have a direct relationship with man. In Gen he speaks to Adam and Eve directly and also visits them in the garden of Eden.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8). The relationship broke down through sin, God started speaking to people through a medium - priests and they write it down. In Deu 11:18-21 God instructed the Israelites to remember His words with their whole being. And to write them down and tie them to their hands as a sign…
In the time that people could not read or write they use certain code or mark to make particular reference. Examples are writing on the wall, family history being passed down through story, archeologist exploring on historical events.
